Express Medicals Sponsorship Spurs Exciting Growth for Wythenshawe Weightlifting Club

We’re excited to share a major development that highlights the incredible partnership between Express Medicals and Wythenshawe Weightlifting Club (WWLC). Thanks to the continued support and sponsorship from Express Medicals, the club’s dream of a new training facility has officially been given the green light!

Over the next 18-24 months, this facility will be built within a commercial gym in the heart of Wythenshawe. It will be a state-of-the-art space designed to serve the needs of both elite athletes and the wider community. After nearly a decade of hard work, attending meetings, and advocating for better resources, club leaders Mike Harris and Dr Simon Davis have finally seen their vision recognised by local authorities. This facility will help the club expand and continue to make a lasting impact.

The success of WWLC doesn’t stop there. Mike has been involved in transformative community initiatives, including prison outreach programmes where British Weightlifting supports inmates in gaining coaching qualifications. This provides individuals with the skills to pursue careers as personal trainers after their release—another way the club fosters positive change beyond the gym walls.

Mike has been working with children and young adults navigating their worlds with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and has empowered himself by attending many courses, seminars, and workshops over the past decade, to enlighten his awareness and understanding of the challenges people with ASD experience in the sporting arena. He has witnessed some amazing results with those individuals and facilitated their inclusion into sport, in a safe, fun and welcoming environment.

Additionally, Mike’s work with the elite athletes of Sale Harriers has led to a remarkable milestone. Renowned Head Coach Dr Norman Poole, with over 40 years of experience, published a book chronicling his journey in athletics and asked Mike to contribute. Not only is Mike credited on the cover, but he also contributed an entire chapter, with exercise illustrations drawn by his talented daughter.

This success is a testament to the power of perseverance, community dedication, and partnership. Express Medicals' generous support has played a pivotal role in enabling these achievements, and WWLC’s story serves as a powerful example of how grassroots sports initiatives can create lasting, positive change.

Stay tuned for updates as construction on the new facility progresses. Huge congratulations to Mike, Simon, and everyone at WWLC! We can’t wait to see what the future holds.
