Variously known as a Fit for Work medical, Fitness for Work or Fit for Task Medical, a Fitness for Task medical is an assessment of your employee’s medical capacity carry out their work without posing risks to their own health and safety, or that of those around them.

Why would a Fitness for Task medical be required?

You may wish to submit your employees for a Fitness for Task medical if they have a condition that could limit their capacity to undertake their work, or if their work has the potential to worsen their condition. Furthermore, some companies use Fit for Task assessments for assurance that any conditions suffered by their employees will not create unnecessary risk to the safety of the employee or others in the course of the work.

When should Fitness for Work assessments be undertaken?

You may choose to book Fit for Work assessments when you are recruiting, transferring or promoting staff or when staff are returning to work after an illness. Remember, these medicals should be undertaken regularly; things change and so can your employee’s health. We recommend a Fit for Task medical every 3 years for people under 65.

What roles require a Fit for Work medical?

We provide Fit for Task assessments for people in a number of roles, including: Plant Operator, Ground Worker, Scaffolder, Demolition Operative, Laborer, Carpenter, Bricklayer, Slinger, Signaler, Banksman, Factory Worker, Mechanical or Electrical Technician, Office Worker, Civils Operative, Site Manager or Supervisor and so on.

What is included in a Fit for Task medical?

Exactly what the assessment covers is entirely dependent on the nature of the work the candidate will be required to undertaken. However, the medical often covers:

  • A questionnaire covering medical history, mental health, lifestyle, and wellbeing

  • Height & weight measurement, including BMI calculation

  • Blood pressure and pulse checks

  • Vision assessment: distance, peripheral and colour

  • Urinalysis

  • A full audiometry evaluation

  • Peak flow/lung function test

  • General mobility assessment

  • Alertness tests

How is Fitness for Work assessed?

A Fitness for Work medical must be delivered face-to-face, with a trained Occupational Health Technician, Nurse, or Physician. Remote or telephone appointments are not suitable for Fit for Work assessments, as our clinicians need to physically examine the candidate. The appointment lasts around 30 minutes
